The judicial custody of five individuals accused in the death of popular Assamese singer Zubeen Garg has been extended by another 14 days, even as the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) ramps up its probe into the high-profile case.

The accused — Shyamkanu Mahanta, organiser of the North East India Festival; Siddharth Sharma, Zubeen Garg’s manager; Sandipan Garg, the singer’s cousin and a now-suspended Deputy Superintendent of Police; and Zubeen’s personal security officers, Nandeswar Bora and Paresh Baishya — were produced before the Chief Judicial Magistrate’s Court via video conferencing on Monday, October 27. The court approved the extension of their custody for another two weeks.

Their previous 14-day judicial custody, which began on October 15, was scheduled to end today. However, due to the Chhath Puja holiday, the hearing was advanced to Monday.

Timeline of Arrests

  • October 1: Shyamkanu Mahanta and Siddharth Sharma arrested
  • October 8: Sandipan Garg arrested
  • October 10: PSOs Nandeswar Bora and Paresh Baishya arrested

Meanwhile, the judicial custody of two other accused — Shekhar Jyoti Goswami and Amritprabha Mahanta — is set to expire tomorrow.

As the CID continues to delve deeper into the case, the state remains gripped by curiosity and emotion over the unfolding investigation into the tragic death of Assam’s beloved musical icon, Zubeen Garg.
