Tributes were paid to Zubeen Garg ahead of the start of the ICC Women’s World Cup opener at Barsapara Stadium

Evergreen hits of heartthrob Zubeen Garg reverberated across the ACA Stadium at Barsapara, Guwahati, as tributes were paid to the legend before the start of the ICC Women’s ODI World Cup opener on Tuesday (Sep 30) afternoon.

Joi Barua, Angarag Papon Mahanta and the Shillong Chamber Choir sang a number of evergreen hits of the iconic singer prior to the start of the inaugural tie between the two co-hosts India and Sri Lanka.

While Papon performed Zubeen Garg’s superhits ‘Maya’ and ‘Pritir Xubhaxe’, Joi Barua performed ‘Mayabini’, ‘Anamika’ and the Bollywood superhit ‘Ya Ali’, as the crowd hummed along with them, many of them with moist and teary eyes.

The internationally-popular Shillong Chamber Choir presented a medley of the legend’s songs, while Shreya Ghoshal, elegantly dressed in a mekhela sador, sung the national anthem prior to start of play.

She is also scheduled to perform the evergreen hit ‘Mayabini’ during the innings break as a tribute to the heartthrob.

Sri Lanka skipper Chamari Athapaththu, meanwhile, won the toss and chose to bowl first.

The match was reduced to a 48-overs-a-side game after play was suspended for some time due to rain.
