Are you searching for a job online, trusting advertisements on social media? Are you scrolling through your phone, applying for jobs, and waiting for that call? Be careful, your next click could cost you your life’s savings.
A woman from Deorali in Gangtok district has become a victim of cyber fraud, losing Rs 68,500 to a fake job advertisement on YouTube.
The ad claimed to offer recruitment for “Indian Airport Jobs.” She clicked the link, applied, and soon received a WhatsApp call from a fraudster posing as a recruiter. The scammer asked her to pay money for “training purposes,” which she did in multiple transactions. When asked to pay more, she grew suspicious and checked the official website — only to discover that the offer was entirely fake.
A complaint has been lodged on the National Cybercrime Reporting Portal (NCRP), and the woman was advised to visit the Sadar Police Station for further investigation.
In a similar incident, a resident of Gangtok was cheated in a fake loan scam that originated from a Facebook advertisement. The victim applied for an online loan and was asked to pay Rs 1,750 as a loan approval fee via WhatsApp. When more payments were demanded, he realised it was another fraudulent scheme.
Authorities have urged the public to verify all online offers and report suspicious activities immediately through the NCRP portal to prevent further cybercrime.
