Seven persons accused in the death of singer Zubeen Garg appeared virtually before a court; next court date is set for January 2026.

The seven people accused in the case of passing away famous Assamese singer Zubeen Garg appeared through video conferencing at a hearing in front of District and Sessions Court in Kamrup Metro in Guwahati.

As per advocate Bijan Mahajan, in the forthcoming hearing scheduled on January 3, 2026, the main agenda will be hearing the charges levelled against the accused.

This is not the first court appearance by the accused. All seven accused appeared before the Chief Judicial Magistrate Court via video conferencing at Kamrup Metro, Guwahati, on December 16. This is after they were summoned following the filing of a charge sheet by the Assam Police Special Investigation Team (SIT) on December 12. The charge sheet is filed by the Assam police SIT in the CJM court. In fact, it describes offenses perpetrated by the accused individuals.

The main chargesheet has been stated to consist of approximately 2,500 pages. Along with other documents and evidence, the entire paperwork comprises about 12,000 pages, which clearly indicates the level of complexity and seriousness of the matter at hand. SIT Chief and Special DGP of CID, Munna Prasad Gupta, has verified the physically huge size of the chargesheet, which comprises evidence against all seven accused.

A total of seven people have been arrested regarding the matter.

The suspects are:

Shyamkanu Mahanta – the main organizer of the concert which Zubeen Garg had attended in Singapore;

Siddharth Sharma – Zubeen Garg’s manager

Shekhar Jyoti Goswami – He is a member of Zubeen

Amritprava Mahanta – singer

Sandipan Garg- Zubeen’s causin

Two personal security officers, namely Nandeswar Bora and Paresh Baishya.

The charges leveled against the accused differ. Four persons, namely Shyamkanu Mahanta, Siddharth Sharma, Shekhar Jyoti Goswami, and Amritprava Mahanta, have been accused of murder under Section 103 of the Bengal and North Eastern States (BNS) Code of Criminal Procedure. Other sections of the code have been applied to the others, taking into account the different degrees of involvement in the incident.

The story revolves around the tragic demise of Zubeen Garg, a well-known singer in Assam, who died prematurely in Singapore on 19th September 2025. Zubeen had come to Singapore for the purpose of participating in a cultural event known as the North East Festival, whose main aim is the promotion of the north-east culture and art across the globe. While in Singapore, he drowned.

The Singapore police and emergency services were quick to act, saving Zubeen from the sea and taking him to a nearby hospital. Zubeen Garg was admitted to the Intensive Care Unit (ICU), where his health was closely watched by medical personnel who provided intensive care. Nevertheless, it became apparent that Zubeen Garg could not be saved, and thus he died as a result of his ailments. His Shocking demise led to an outcry in Assam and the entire North-East as fans, artists, and politicians were taken aback by this news.

The inquiry into the death of Zubeen Garg has been comprehensive since then. The Assam Police SIT has been investigating the circumstances surrounding the death of Garg, along with the organizers of the music festival.

The comprehensive charge sheet consisting of thousands of pages shows the meticulous planning of the authorities investigating the case. The charge sheet has been prepared after a comprehensive inquiry into the entire episode. The charge sheet consists of thousands of pages. While the case unfolds, the impending hearing scheduled for January 3, 2026, may hold the key for the final determination of the case, which may potentially drag into the future for the punishment of the guilty party.

At the same time, the passing of Zubeen Garg has left the people of Assam and the entire international community in mourning, underlining the shock that has resulted from the untimely death of the cultural phenomenon from the region.
