Prime Minister of India, Shri Narendra Modi has been awarded the First Class of the Order of Oman. It is the national award of the Republic of Oman.

With this award, Prime Minister Modi has become one among the select few world leaders who have been decorated with the award. It is the twenty-ninth international award that the Prime Minister of India has received since the inception of his tenure.

The Order of Oman is a prestigious award that was previously bestowed on various respected international personalities. These include Queen Elizabeth Nelson Mandela Emperor Akihito Queen Maxima King Abdullah of Jordan. By being included among those who have been bestowed with the prestigious Order of Oman, Prime Minister Narendra Modi finds himself among the league of leaders who have immensely contributed towards global peace, diplomacy, and international cooperation.This is an indication that the bilateral relations between Oman and India have been improving.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi reached Oman on Wednesday marking the last stop of the three-country visit. His visit included a warm and formal reception by the Sultan of Oman, Haitham bin Tarik bin Mohd Al Said, at the Al Baraka Palace in the capital Muscat. This goes to show how the Oman government views the relations with India and the friendship between the two leaders. The two leaders had bilateral talks for the enhancement of relations in different sectors.

One of the major effects of the visit was the signing of a free trade agreement between India and Oman, referred to as the Comprehensive Economic Partnership Agreement. The Ministry also made it clear that this agreement would bring benefits to people in both countries. Prime Minister Modi and Sultan Haitham bin Tarik held a bilateral meeting during which they had an exchange of views on a number of topics. These included defense and security, trade and investment, energy, agriculture, and emerging areas. The two also talked about cooperation and people-to-people ties, which are the base that sustains the historic relationship that exists between the two countries.

Historical ties between the countries of India and Oman have existed for many years, especially because of maritime ties.
