Hasina’s Exile Fallout ; Lynching of Hindu in Hadis Triggers Fresh Tension in Indo-Bangladesh Relations 2025

Indo-Bangladesh

The killing and lynching in Hadis of a Hindu was only the latest in a series of events contributing to an increased tension in India’s relationship with Bangladesh

Ties between India and Bangladesh are further strained due to violent events, including the death of a student leader from Bangladesh and the lynching of a Hindu in the Indian part of the state of Bengal. This situation has resulted in protests outside the missions of both nations.

Relations were already strained because of developments related in some way or another to the exile of the former prime minister of Bangladesh, Sheikh Hasina Wazed, who is at present in New Delhi. Both nations have dispatched each other’s envoys and various visa centers have been shut down because of protests outside their missions.

Last week, a rally was disrupted by the Dhaka police, as protesters were marching towards the Indian High Commission located in the Gulshan area. On the other hand, protests raged outside the Bangladeshi High Commission in India, with protests organized by various groups such as the Vishwa Hindu Parishad. The protests resulted from alleged atrocities committed against Hindus in Bangladesh due to the lynching of Dipu Chandra Das.

In another issue, the strained relationship between the two countries comes as Bangladesh finds itself in the midst of unrest influenced by the murder of popular student leader Sharif Osman Hadi.

Chronology of important events:

November 17th :

Sheikh Hasina gets the death sentence from a Bangladeshi court for violence associated with the student-led uprising in two thousand and twenty-four. India makes its response by expressing commitment to peace, democracy, inclusion, and stability in Bangladesh. The government of Dhaka asks for the return of the ex-prime minister from India.

December 12th:

December 17th :

The police stop protesters marching to the Indian High Commission in Dhaka, demanding that Sheikh Hasina and others who had fled following last year’s uprising return to Bangladesh. After this and comments by Abdullah, India summons the high commissioner of Bangladesh to discuss the security situation and threats to the Indian high commission.

December 18th :

Sharif Osman Hadi dies from his wounds during a medical treatment in Singapore. The death sparks another round of violence in Bangladesh, as protesters pour into the streets.

December 18th :

During the Riots, a Hindu worker named Dipu Chandra Das is lynched by a mob along the highway from Dhaka to Mymensingh in Jamirdia Dubaliapara. Reports say that initially, it was a religious insult that sparked the attack; however, a police investigation later reveals it was caused by a work-related conflict. 20 Protesters muster outside the Bangladesh mission in New Delhi and are later dispersed by the police. The Indian visa application center in Chittagong is closed indefinitely.

December 20th :

One It says it is concerned about the death of the Hindu male and is following developments in Bangladesh very carefully. The foreign ministry further describes as misleading reports of a security breach at the Bangladesh High Commission in New Delhi.

December 22nd : Protests take place at the Bangladesh visa center in Siliguri, West Bengal. The visas in Siliguri and Delhi are suspended by Bangladesh. The suspension is also seen in the assistant high commission in Tripura, as it follows protests held outside.

December 23rd :

The Bangladeshi foreign ministry summonses the Indian ambassador based on security concerns against Bangladeshi missions. The incidents are noted to include damage of property at the Siliguri Visa Centre on December twenty two and protest rallies outside the Bangladeshi High Commission in New Delhi on December twenty. If you also want this reduced simplification or changed into a more balanced test suitable style, I can definitely do that.
