Hagrama Mohilary’s Bodoland People’s Front (BPF) has made a strong comeback in Bodoland politics with a clear majority in the recently concluded Bodoland Territorial Council (BTC) elections. The results turned the political calculations upside down, as the BPF secured 28 out of the 40 seats, reclaiming its dominance despite the aggressive campaign of the ruling BJP and the earlier rise of the United People’s Party Liberal (UPPL). This victory is being seen as a major shift in the political mood of the region, where the UPPL, once considered the strongest challenger, has been pushed back badly with only 7 seats.
The Congress, which fielded candidates in all constituencies, failed to secure even a single seat, while the BJP managed to win 5 seats. For many, this election result reflects how voters leaned back towards Hagrama Mohilary’s leadership after trying out alternatives in recent years. Even though Mohilary contested from two constituencies, he could win only one, defeating Khampa Borgoyari in Debargaon. In Chirangduar, however, he was defeated by Khampa by a margin of 463 votes, showing the tough local battles that shaped this election.
The results also brought to light intense face-offs among former political allies who had turned rivals. In Kajalgaon, a historic battle unfolded where big names of Bodo politics like Hagrama Mohilary, Khampa Borgoyari, Chandan Brahma, and Paniram Brahma clashed against each other, creating much excitement on the ground. Khampa, who had once been a close associate of Hagrama, switched to UPPL and managed to defeat him in Chirangduar. On the other hand, former minister Chandan Brahma faced a humiliating defeat against Paniram Brahma of BPF.
The election also exposed the weakening hold of UPPL in Kokrajhar district, where the party was almost wiped out, managing to secure only one seat while BPF swept 10 out of 12 constituencies. From names like Munmun Brahma in Parbatjhora to William Narzary in Jamduar, BPF showed strong dominance across Kokrajhar. In Chirang too, BPF candidates managed to hold ground by defeating UPPL’s nominees with convincing margins.
In Tamulpur district, the results were more mixed as BJP and BPF secured two seats each, while UPPL managed to win only one seat. Notably, UPPL’s chief executive member Promod Boro managed to win from Goibari, but the overall tally of his party was disappointing compared to earlier expectations.
For observers, this election highlights a big message from the people of Bodoland. After trying new leadership under UPPL, the voters appear to have returned to BPF with renewed trust in Hagrama Mohilary. The outcome not only restores his position as a strong force in Bodoland politics but also opens up new challenges for both BJP and UPPL in shaping their strategies ahead. The dramatic results, rivalries, and voter swings have once again proved that politics in Bodoland remains dynamic and full of surprises.
