A probe has been ordered by C.V. Ananda Bose, the Governor of West Bengal, in connection with the use of the starter gun that fired when a marathon was flagged off in Kolkata on December 21.

According to an official in the Raj Bhavan, the probe has been initiated based on a report that has been received from Aide-de-Camp to the Governor, Major Nikhil Kumar, on Tuesday, December 23, 2025.

As reported by the official, an inquiry committee has been formed to look at the issue from different angles, which can be related to security breach, sabotage, and any other danger to the safety of the Governor. The committee would also look at the state of the equipment that was used.

The report stated that the starter gun had been provided by the event organizers, and Bengal Governor Bose had followed every procedure in place for safety while he used the starter gun. The report highlighted minor splinters or particles being released during the shooting of the starter gun, but it clarified that there had been no injuries, whether to Governor Bose or anyone else who had been present in the event location.

Officials mentioned that Bengal Governor Bose has dealt with this type of starter gun before and has flagged off this same marathon for the past two years without problems. They mentioned that starter guns are meant to produce sound and smoke only. The authorities are looking into whether or not there was some sort of malfunction in this case since the governor and his team may not have tested the starter gun properly before using it.

The Bengal Governor’s Office quoted media reports suggesting that the weapon was discharged without taking the needed safety measures as factually incorrect. The report identified a probable equipment malfunction as the cause of the incident.

After this incident, security for the Governor has been beefed up by officials.
