Assam Protests Erupt Outside Baksa District Jail After Arrival of Shyamkanu Mahanta & Co.

Assam Protest

Tension gripped the area as Assam protests broke out outside Baksa district jail following the arrival of Shyamkanu Mahanta and his associates, drawing heavy police deployment and public outrage.

Massive protests erupted outside Baksa district jail in Assam on Wednesday as five accused in the Zubeen Garg death case — including Northeast Festival organiser Shyamkanu Mahanta, the singer’s manager Siddharth Sharma, and his cousin brother Sandipon Garg, an APS officer — were brought to the facility after being remanded in judicial custody by the Chief Judicial Magistrate, Kamrup (Metro).

Residents from Nikasi and nearby areas, still mourning the untimely death of Assam’s beloved heartthrob Zubeen Garg, gathered outside the prison gates, demanding justice. The crowd turned violent as protesters began pelting stones at the police convoy escorting the accused, forcing law enforcement to retaliate with baton charges and tear gas to disperse the mob.

“They should be sentenced to death. We will give justice to our Zubeen Da,” said an emotional woman protester.

Security forces, including the Rapid Action Force (RAF), have been deployed to control the tense situation around the jail premises.

Earlier in the day, the five accused were transported from Guwahati under heavy police security after they requested not to be lodged in Guwahati Central Jail due to safety concerns, citing the presence of several dreaded criminals, including ULFA cadres. Authorities decided to place them instead in the newly constructed Baksa Central Jail.

The accused — Shyamkanu Mahanta, Siddharth Sharma, Sandipon Garg, and his two PSOs Paresh Baishya and Nandeswar Bora — were sent to 14-day judicial custody. Meanwhile, Zubeen Garg’s drummer Shekharjyoti Goswami and co-singer Amrit Prabha Mahanta are also expected to be sent to judicial custody once their remand ends on October 16.

The situation remains tense in Baksa as supporters continue to demand severe punishment for those allegedly involved in the mysterious death of Zubeen Garg, whose passing in Singapore on September 19 has left Assam and the nation in shock.
