ABSU Presses for Full Implementation of Bodo Accord, Warns of Statewide Agitation in Assam

Bodo Accord

The All Bodo Students Union (ABSU) has urged the Assam government to honor every clause of the Bodo Accord, cautioning that negligence could trigger mass protests across the state.

The All Bodo Students Union (ABSU) on Sunday has reiterated their long-standing demands for the full implementation of the Bodo Peace Accord and warned of launching a strong democratic agitation across the Bodo region if the Accord continues to remain unimplemented.

ABSU stated that the several critical resolutions were adopted during the union’s extended central executive meeting held in Rangia on October 8 and the key demand was the full implementation of all Clauses of the Bodo Peace Accord, signed on January 27, 2020.

The Union has announced a series of district-level rallies across Assam in the last week of October. These rallies will be followed by a protest programme in New Delhi in November end.

On ST status demand of six communities in Assam, ABSU said that granting ST status must not compromise the rights and Protections of the existing 14 Schedule Tribes in the State.

The union urged Parliament to pass the 125th Constitutional Amendment Bill in the upcoming session to address tribal issues.

ABSU raised concerns over the Teachers Eligibility Test for Bodo people residing in Karbi Anglong, urging the government to conduct the exam in accordance with commitments made in the Bodo Accord. President Dipen Boro noted that discussions on the matter had already taken place with Assam’s Education Minister Ranoj Pegu.

Among other educational demands, ABSU emphasized the need for Provincialization of Schools as per the Accord and called for action against rising social evils such as alcohol abuse, gambling and drug addiction.

Additionally, ABSU strongly questioned the circumstances surrounding the recent death of renowned Assamese Singer Zubeen Garg. The union alleged foul play, questioning why he was made to swim in the sea without a life jacket, despite known health issues.

ABSU alleged, expressing dissatisfaction with the preliminary investigation conducted by SIT Chief and Special DGP Munna Prasad Gupta.

The student body has demanded a CBI investigation, and warned that public outrage will grow if justice is not served.

ABSU cautioned that the case should not go the way the Junmoni Rabha investigation went, which they claimed ended without resolution.
